I’m sure all of us have looked in the mirror and wished for healthy more youthful looking skin at some point or another. If you’re like me, you scrolled through Pinterest, Google, and searched YouTube videos for some home remedies to recreate.
You’ve also likely have done a ton of research into which products to purchase to get that healthy, young looking, glowing skin you’ve always wished for.
Well, search no more. In this post I will give 10 tips that I live by or recently adopted and findings from a wide range of research.
Furthermore, I will explain to you my tried-and-true ways on how I maintain a healthy and youthful looking skin, while also looking well over a decade younger than I am. Yes, I said it. A DECADE!
I am turning 40 this year (saying this blows my mind) and people have always thought I was younger than I am. People are always shocked when they found out how old I am, or should I say, how young I am.
My youngest sister and I are 11 years apart and people would always mistake me to be around the same age as her. When people realize my age, their minds are blown away and it gets me every time, lol.
I know that genetics play a role in the way I look, but I have also lived by and followed these tips to keep me looking my best and feeling young and if you continue reading, you will find out how you can look and feel young too!
How To Have Healthy Youthful Looking Skin
Having healthy, youthful-looking skin requires a combination of proper skincare habits and healthy lifestyle choices. Let’s dive in, shall we?
1. Hydrate
First and foremost, stay hydrated. Your body is made mostly of water and your body needs water for your kidneys and for the rest of your body to function correctly. With that being said, water is essential for a healthy youthful looking skin.
According to Medical News Today, dehydration can cause you to be more susceptible to skin conditions and wrinkles. Therefore, I try to shoot for 8 glasses of water a day.
An easy way to keep track and motivate you to reach your goal of drinking 8 glasses a day is to do so with a water bottle just like the one I have.
This water bottle holds 75 ounces of water and tells you the exact time to drink. No guessing involved. It is perfect if you’re the type to forget (or am I the only one) how much water they have consumed for the day.
2. Moisturize
Use a moisturizer (preferably with SPF) and make this a daily morning routine or right when you hop out of the shower.
Taking a hot shower strips your skin of natural oils and moisturizing helps nurture your skin back to good health.
When you moisturize your skin, you prevent your skin from drying and creating fine lines and helps you stay looking young. It reduces skin issues such as dryness or oiliness which in turn can cause breakouts.
In addition, your skin is rapidly shedding and moisturizing it will help your skin to repair.
My favorite facial moisturizer is OLAY Complete by Oil of Olay. This one has an SPF of 15, but they have ones with higher SPF. I have been using OLAY Complete since I was a little girl.
Every morning my mom would lather it all over my face before I head out the house no matter what and as an adult, I still do the same for myself. I tend to have dry skin, so I cannot live without my OLAY Complete.
3. Sunscreen
Wear sunscreen. If you plan on going out in the sun or even on days when it is not sunny, always wear sunscreen. Sunscreen minimizes your risk of deadly skin cancer.
According to Unity Point Cancer Center, ultraviolet (UV rays) exposure is the leading cause of cancer and pre-mature aging by breaking down the collagen and the elasticity of your skin. Additionally, it causes hyperpigmentation (darkened skin patches) and skin inflammation.
You can wear sunscreen over your moisturizer or find a two-in-one moisturizer with sunscreen, like the one I use for my face.
The higher the SPF the better protection you have from UV rays. I tend to use ones with SPF 15 during the winter and SPF 30 to SPF 50 during the spring and summer days.
Don’t forget to wear sunscreen all over your body, as well.
4. Facial Massage
Give yourself a facial massage. Massaging your skin helps circulate your blood capillaries, this in turn will firm and increase elasticity to your skin. Also, facial massages increases the reduction of wrinkles, sagging skin, and skin textures. Additionally, facial massages may also reduce the appearance of acne.
To massage my skin, I use a vibrating rose quartz face roller. I absolutely love this face roller. It has two interchangeable attaching heads, one for the whole face and another specifically for under the eyes.
I place the heads in the refrigerator for better performance. This helps keep fine lines and under eye puffiness at bay. However, you can use your fingers to massage your face as well.
Before I bought my vibrating rose quartz face roller, I searched a YouTube video on how to massage your face and implemented that in my daily life.
5. Exercise
Be active and move. Exercise not only helps you stay fit but also helps keep your skin looking young and vibrant.
According to WebMD, exercise gets your heart racing and your blood flowing, which “helps nourish skin cells and keeps them vital.”
Exercise reduces stress hormones, which also causes pre-mature aging and causes or exacerbates skin conditions, such as acne and eczema.
Try to shoot for exercising three times a week if you can. I actually work out three to five times a week at bootcamp, but you don’t have be like me.
Just going outside for a walk and moving will get your heart pumping and oxygen flowing into your blood stream, especially if you have a sedentary job.
6. Eat Healthy
Eat healthy. It’s true. What you eat does matter and has great affects on your skin. Eating fresh fruits, vegetables, and food with Omega 3-fatty acids can help reduce the effects of the aging process on the skin, while fried, sugary, processed food, and refined carbs does the opposite.
Fresh fruits and vegetables are loaded with antioxidants and help control the harm done by free radicals, which damages the cells and causes wrinkles. Free radicals are unstable molecules that breaks your cells down over time and as you age your body loses its capacity to battle the impact of free radicals.
Food rich in omega 3-fatty acids such as salmon, walnuts, and chia seeds strengthens the outer layer of your skin so that external pollutants and toxins are kept out.
It also helps reduce acne, skin inflammation, UVA and UVB sensitivity, and moisturizes the skin within to minimize dry and itchy skin.
Don’t get me wrong. This is the hardest tip for me to follow and I am not always as disciplined as I should when it comes to nutrition, because I LOVE food so much.
However, when I do eat unhealthily my body and my skin pays the price. I can see and feel a noticeable difference with how my skin looks and feels. Not to mention, I become lethargic and groggy, and my skin starts to breakout and looks dull and dry.
7. Skin Cleansing
Practice daily face washing. Regular face washing helps skin looking and feeling fresh and radiant. When you incorporate face washing in your daily routine, you increase hydration and moisture in your skin and decrease skin problems from blocked pores that causes dryness, irritation, inflammation, and breakouts.
Cleansing your skin on a daily basis also removes dirt, oil, and other build up, such as pollutants and bacteria that’s left on your skin, which can lead to fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, and acne.
8. Exfoliate
Exfoliate your skin regularly. As mentioned, our skin is rapidly shedding dead skin cells and the cells cling to the surface of our skin that can lead to breakouts and other skin conditions.
Exfoliating your skin reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It removes dirt and debris that face wash leaves behind and unclogs the pores, which allows your natural skin oils to release.
Exfoliating also helps fade away skin spots for a more even skin tone and smoother skin texture.
9. Night Cream
Apply a daily night cream before bed. Night creams aid in your skin’s replenishing process of staying healthy, radiant, and youthful. It provides a layer of protectant from dirt and dead skin cells that are left on sheets and pillows from previous nights before.
This can lead to breakouts and acne. Night creams can also improve the skin’s capacity to reduce signs of aging by slowing down the aging process since most night creams are made with ingredients, such as retinol and hydroxy acids that will effectively rejuvenate and hydrate your skin overnight.
My favorite is Shiseido Benefiance WrinkleResist24 Night Cream. I love the rich smell and the way the cream glides on my face. It is made with wrinkle-smoothing ingredients and provides intense moisture to your face.
I can see and feel a noticeable difference in the morning. I absolutely love it. If rich smells aren’t for you, I would suggest you shop around for one that best fit your skin needs, but not to miss out on the benefits of what night creams can do for you.
10. Sleep
Get your beauty rest on. According to the National Sleep Foundation, adults need 7 to 9 hours of sleep. Your body and cells replenish and repairs itself overnight, which means you need to get a good night’s rest. Getting enough sleep releases human growth hormones which is responsible for the stimulation of collagen production that will keep your skin looking plump and smooth.
Sleeping through the night allows your skin to build new cells for a brighter, younger-looking luminous complexion.
However, not getting enough sleep or sleep deprivation can cause a multitude of issues on your skin and the way you look, such as puffy dark circles, red-glossy eyes, and ashen wrinkled skin.
Remember, healthy youthful looking skin doesn’t happen overnight, it takes due diligence from you and if you follow these tips you will have healthier, youthful looking skin in no time.
